Roger passed away on January 31st at 8.25pm as a result of complications from malaria contracted from a jungle visit in Bali.

According to Matt Cutts, Google Engineer, canonicalization is the "process of picking the best url when there are several choices, and it usually refers to home pages." 

Cutts continues to explain that "…when Google “canonicalizes” a url, we try to pick the url that seems like the best representative from that set."

So for example, the search engines consider fabianlim.name, www.fabianlim.name and  fabianlim.name/index.php to be different web pages, even though they all serve up the same content.

This results in a link popularity "split" between URLs and will affect the effectiveness of your search engine optimization efforts.

One solution to fix this problem is to perform a 301 redirect via the use of htaccess.

Two versions of the .htaccess solution exist, a generic and non-generic solution.

First, try the generic version because it does not require any modification of the code at all. 

If the generic version does not work, you can try the non-generic version.

If your website already has a .htaccess file on the server, I strongly recommend  first you create a backup version of the file on your local computer in case you mess up the codes accidentally.

So, to redirect the non-www version of your URL to the www version,  copy and paste one of the two 3-line codes below into an empty text file and name the text file as htaccess.txt:

Version 1 (Generic Version)

(More user-friendly especially if you have multiple websites since you don’t need to insert your domain URL into the code below)

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=301,L]

Version 2 (Non-Generic Version)

(Be sure to change example.com to your domain name and be careful NOT to add/delete spaces or add/remove any of the symbols in the code)

RewriteRule (.*) http://www.example.com/$1 [R=301,L]

Note: For either versions to work, Apache mod_rewite needs to be enabled by your web host

Upload this htaccess.txt file onto your web directory (typically public_html for cPanel servers).

Change the file name from htaccess.txt into .htaccess (i.e. place a dot in front of htaccess).

Test the results of this change by typing the non-www version of your domain using a web browser.

If the above steps have been implemented correctly, the non-www version will redirect to the www verion of your domain.

That’s all to it!

Incorporating several features from the Google Trends tool, Google listed several interesting ways to use Google Insight For Search.

Here are 3 additional ideas on how you can use Google Insight For Search in your internet marketing business:

1) Compare Keyword Popularity & Trend

For example, let’s say you want to research on the used golf club market and want to know the relative popularity and trend for the keyword terms "used golf club", "discount golf club" and "cheap golf club".

Here is a screenshot of the trend graph generated by Google Insight for Search for each of the keyword terms:

Additionally, if you are logged-in to your Google account, Google will provide an additional scale consisting relative numbers so you can have a better idea of the relative popularity of each keyword in percentage terms.

So you can infer from the above graph that "used golf club" is a relatively more popular search term in general compared with "discount golf club" and "cheap golf club" – and consistently so since 2004. However, when you look at this market from a regional perspective, the results point to a different conclusion – see details below.

2) Determine Keyword Seasonality

When you are targeting a niche, it would be nice to know whether the niche is a seasonal niche – becuase this would have an impact on your monthly cash flow.

Another importance of understanding seasonal trend is it helps explain sales fluctuation from month to month – so you know when to expect a dip or rise in sales accordingly.

The trend graph above shows the "used golf club" dipping in popularity during the 4th and 1st quarter of each year – and consistently since 2004.

And while this may seem puzzling to some people (those who expect general search volume to increaase during the Christmas and holiday period), the above trend can possibly be explained by the next graph, which depicts regional interest of these keywords:

You’ll observe that the top region is the United States, and therefore one possible explanation for a dip in search demand for "used golf club" during the 4th and 1st quarters is because these periods may not be the golfing season in the USA – unless winter golfing exist in the US!

This regional chart also offers an interesting fact that whilst "used golf club" is the most popular search term in the USA, the terms "discount golf club" and "used golf club" appear more popular in the UK.

Another interesting piece of info is there seems to be a good market for "used golf club" in Singapore!

3) Identify New Keywords Ideas

Another useful feature offered by this tool is the ability to identify additional keyword phrases related to your main keyowords.

For example, Google Insight for Search revealed an additional 6 top searches related to "used golf clubs".

In addition, this tool also offers suggestions for related keywords that are  "rising in popularity"- these keywords will come in useful for your pay-per-click and search engine optimization campaigns.

So spend some time using the Google Insight for Search tool and you’ll be able to uncover new insights about your niche markets you didn’t know before!

There are many websites where you can get a ‘Bookmark This Site’ javascript code, but be sure to find one that is cross-browser compatible i.e. works properly in Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera.

After many many months of planning and preparation, World Internet Academy is opening its doors to the public for the very first time.
