But what’s important is the need to realize that KEI is more useful when comparing RELATIVE effectiveness between related keywords and less useful when comparing between unrelated keywords.

In addition, when considering keyword effectiveness, you need to consider not only the KEI, but also the keyword competition.

For example, you may discover a high KEI keyword like ‘child car seat’ during your keyword research.

However, just because it is a high KEI keyword does not mean you should target this keyword.

You’ll face 33,000 allintitle competition if you wish to target ‘child car seat’.

The question you need to ask yourself is whether you have the SEO skills to compete against such a large number of competitors?

Consider two potential and related keywords below:

‘child car seat safety rating’    

Allintitle:   Volume     KEI
128             720      4,050

‘new child car seat’ 

Allintitle:   Volume     KEI
843             720      615

Both keywords have a far lower KEI than ‘child car seat’.

However, they also have far lower allintitle competition.

As such, you are better off targeting these long-tail keywords as they are much easier to rank.

Don’t forget that when deciding which keywords to target, you have to also consider the ‘commercial value’ of the keyword.

And no, you don’t need to know the OCI (Online Commercial Intent) of the keyword to figure this out.

Comparing ‘child car seat safety rating’ and ‘new child car seat’, it is pretty obvious that ‘new child car seat’ has a higher ‘commercial value’ i.e. someone searching with this keyword is likely looking for a product than ‘child car seat safety rating’.

So based on the above two examples, you may want to focus on getting ranked for ‘new child car seat’, since you probably could sell car seats from Amazon.com and make a decent commission.

But then again, you may want to optimize for ‘child car seat safety rating’ simply because these people are looking for relevant information, and even though they are probably not in a ‘ready to buy’ mode as yet, these visitors may well return to your website in future to purchase a child car seat, if they are impressed with the quality of your website content.

Incorporating several features from the Google Trends tool, Google listed several interesting ways to use Google Insight For Search.

Here are 3 additional ideas on how you can use Google Insight For Search in your internet marketing business:

1) Compare Keyword Popularity & Trend

For example, let’s say you want to research on the used golf club market and want to know the relative popularity and trend for the keyword terms "used golf club", "discount golf club" and "cheap golf club".

Here is a screenshot of the trend graph generated by Google Insight for Search for each of the keyword terms:

Additionally, if you are logged-in to your Google account, Google will provide an additional scale consisting relative numbers so you can have a better idea of the relative popularity of each keyword in percentage terms.

So you can infer from the above graph that "used golf club" is a relatively more popular search term in general compared with "discount golf club" and "cheap golf club" – and consistently so since 2004. However, when you look at this market from a regional perspective, the results point to a different conclusion – see details below.

2) Determine Keyword Seasonality

When you are targeting a niche, it would be nice to know whether the niche is a seasonal niche – becuase this would have an impact on your monthly cash flow.

Another importance of understanding seasonal trend is it helps explain sales fluctuation from month to month – so you know when to expect a dip or rise in sales accordingly.

The trend graph above shows the "used golf club" dipping in popularity during the 4th and 1st quarter of each year – and consistently since 2004.

And while this may seem puzzling to some people (those who expect general search volume to increaase during the Christmas and holiday period), the above trend can possibly be explained by the next graph, which depicts regional interest of these keywords:

You’ll observe that the top region is the United States, and therefore one possible explanation for a dip in search demand for "used golf club" during the 4th and 1st quarters is because these periods may not be the golfing season in the USA – unless winter golfing exist in the US!

This regional chart also offers an interesting fact that whilst "used golf club" is the most popular search term in the USA, the terms "discount golf club" and "used golf club" appear more popular in the UK.

Another interesting piece of info is there seems to be a good market for "used golf club" in Singapore!

3) Identify New Keywords Ideas

Another useful feature offered by this tool is the ability to identify additional keyword phrases related to your main keyowords.

For example, Google Insight for Search revealed an additional 6 top searches related to "used golf clubs".

In addition, this tool also offers suggestions for related keywords that are  "rising in popularity"- these keywords will come in useful for your pay-per-click and search engine optimization campaigns.

So spend some time using the Google Insight for Search tool and you’ll be able to uncover new insights about your niche markets you didn’t know before!
