But for now, I want to show you how to attract FREE targeted traffic from search engines using search engine optimization (SEO) techniques to target long-tail keywords.

What is a long-tail keyword?

A long-tail keyword refers to a niche keyword that is targeted and specific.

The term ‘long tail’ was coined by Chris Anderson, Editor of Wired Magazine, when he released his ground-breaking book, The Long Tail.

Here’s my personal definition of ‘long-tail’ keyword:

A long-tail keyword is a micro-niche comprising low-volume keywords (three or more words in length) AND low-volume competition

Take for example the popular niche “web hosting”.

Most marketers target this niche by focusing their SEO efforts on the key phrase “web hosting”.

And they usually achieve zero results.

Why?

Simply because almost EVERY other marketer is ALSO targeting the same key phrase!

Here’s a look at the search volume for “web hosting” (see diagram below) I extracted using the Free Wordtracker Online Tool.

 Notice the term “web hosting” attracts 5400 searches each day.

A huge market for sure, but is it also a competitive market?

Let’s find out…

When assessing competition, I like to use the Google allintitle: operator – because it tells me how many web pages are competing for a top ranking for the keyword.

What is AlIInTitle:?

Allintitle: is a Google operator that indicates the number of web pages in Google’s index that have the targeted keyword phrase between the <title> </title> tags of their web pages.

This is useful information because when performing basic on-page SEO, we always place our targeted keyword phrase in the title tag of our web page. Hence, the presence of a keyword phrase in the title tag suggests a web page is also competing for a top ranking.

To determine the allintitle: competition, all you need to do is type ‘allintitle: your keyword’ in the Google search box (see diagram below):

What does the above snapshot tell me?

It tells me there are over 9 million web pages competing for a top 10 ranking in Google for the keyword “web hosting”.

That’s a heck a lot of competitors if you asked me!

No wonder you’ll get nowhere if you target “web hosting” and hope to get free traffic from the search engines!

So rather than target “web hosting”, focus instead on numerous long-tail keywords related to “web hosting”.

How To Locate Long-Tail Keywords?

A great technique is to start at the bottom of the Free Wordtracker Tool results (see diagram below)

Consider the long-tail keyword “low cost web hosting services” with 58 searches a day (not bad a search volume for a long-tail keyword!)

Let’s take a look at the allintitle: competition for “low cost web hosting services” (see diagram below)

This long-tail keyword has over 4,000 competing allintitle: web pages. Based on my SEO  experience, any intermediate SEO-trained marketer would be able to achieve a top 10 ranking for this keyword phrase, because he/she only needs to compete with 4,000 other webmasters.

Would you rather face 4,000 or 9 million competitors? Go figure!

I did say you’ll probably require intermediate SEO knowledge to gain a Top 10 ranking for a keyword with an allintitle:  of 4,000.

So, are beginner internet marketers doomed?

Certainly not!

If you are an internet marketing newbie, I strongly suggest you target ultra-low allintitle: keywords.

To locate ultra-low allintitle: competing keywords, you may need to ‘dig deeper’ by drilling down on a keyword using Free Wordtracker Tool.

I’ve drilled-down on the keyword “low cost web hosting services” (see diagram below).

Ok, so the search volume for “california low cost web hosting services” is not great at all, with just 3 searches a day.

But then again, a top ranked web page for this search term can drive 3 x 30 = 90 visitors to your website in one month, or 1095 vistors a year!

Not bad, considering you didn’t spend a penny for these visitors!

What about the competition?

There are literally no web pages in Google competing for a Top 10 ranking for the keyword “california low cost web hosting services”!

Woohoo!

Great news, because this means almost anyone with basic SEO knowledge should be able to achieve a Top 10 ranking for the key phrase “california low cost web hosting services”.

So if you want to attract targeted traffic to your website but are new to the SEO game, start by targeting free traffic to your website using ultra-low volume long-tail keywords – and I guarantee you’ll be making money online in no time!

The Bottom Line: Where You Lack in Knowledge and Experience You Make Up by Sheer Numbers!

But what is a niche market?

A niche market is a specific group of people with similar interests, wants and needs

Here is my simple definition: "A niche market is a specific group of people with similar interests, wants and needs." 

The benefit of targeting a niche market rather than a general market is it allows you to provide specific "tailor made" solutions to these people. 

From a marketer’s perspective, this is perfect as it allows you to add value to and profit from a niche market in just a couple of months rather than years – because you don’t have to spend years understanding the entire range of issues related to a more general market. 

For example, let’s look at the "golf" market.

It is certainly tempting, especially for beginners to want to target a large market like "golf".

After all, who doesn’t want to make BIG MONEY?

But what most people don’t seem to understand is that a large market like "golf" is typically dominated by BIG PLAYERS with huge and deep pockets.

To illustrate, let’s take a look at the top 10 "golf" listings in Google:

Firstly, notice there are over 605 million competiting web page in Google for "golf"!

(Allintitle: competition is 34.5 million – this is huge serious competition!)

Side note: For a detailed explanation on the concept of allintitle: competition, please read my blog post on long-tail keywords.

So forget about targeting a highly lucrative and highly competitive niche market like "golf".

If you really want to target a golf-related niche, you need to drill-down and locate a "sub" golf niche where there is less heavy competition, for example, the "used golf clubs" niche:

"Used golf clubs" is searched close to 500 times a day – just 10% of the search volume for golf, but the competition is also far lower, with an allintitle: competition of 14,900 compared with the allintitle competition of 34.5 million for "golf":

So, targeting the "used golf clubs" niche is certainly achieveable – and the only question that remains is whether you have the skills to get your website ranked in the top 10 listings of Google.

Of course it is very possible to build and dominate a niche using just paid traffic i.e. using pay-per-click advertising - but in the long-term, you want to ensure you are getting free targeted traffic via the search engines as well via search engine optimization.

And to this end, you need to the target long-tail keywords in your niche so that you can drive maximum traffic and sales.

In the "used golf clubs" example, I’d start targeting long-tail keywords like "used mizuno golf clubs", "left handed golf clubs" etc.

Remember, optimize one long-tail keyword PER web page only.

Lastly, if the niche you plan to target does not have PPC advertisers, this is a warning sign that the niche in question may not be as profitable as you think.

Because other than advertising revenue (e.g. Google AdSense) if you want to really profit from a niche, you need to either offer or recommend products or services to the niche. 

And since PPC advertising is one of the best ways to promote a product or service online, the presence of PPC ads suggests a profitable niche market exists and others are already profiting from the market

All you need to do is study your competition carefully and research products and services that are being offered in the niche market.

And then, simply reverse-engineer your competition!

In summary, here are 3 tips to identifying a profitable niche market:

1) Don’t target highly lucrative and highly competitive markets

2) Do drill-down and locate a profitable sub-niche with medium to low competition instead

3) Look out for the presence of PPC ads as it is an indication the niche is likely to be a profitable one.

This week, I’m going to show you how to write effective long-tail articles that will rank well in search engines and drive you relevant and targeted visitors.

First, here’s proof that you can drive traffic using long-tail keywords.

I wrote a blog post on 26 January 2008 about the "chipmunk" sound problem in Camtasia videos and how to go about fixing the problem. Here’s the link to that article: Camtasia Chipmunk Audio Bug Fix.

As a result of the above blog post, I was able to drive several long-tail traffic to this blog. Here is a small list of actual long-tail keywords (extracted from my Google Analytics stats) that visitors typed in the search engines and found my blog via the organic listings:

While each long-tail keyword only attracted one visitor each to my blog, the interesting point to note is it took only ONE blog post to drive all these long-tail traffic!

The truth is that people search using all kinds of keywords and keyword variations (as seen above) – so it is important you keep this fact in mind when writing a blog post or article.

When I create a blog post, or any online content for that matter, I always write it with the aim of maximizing search engine traffic to my blog.

Writing content that rank well in the search engines is really one of the more important and effective "on-page" search engine optimization techniques you can employ.

(And for you geeks out there – yes, this has everything to do about Latent Semantic Indexing)

Important: If you want to measure the effectiveness of your article marketing efforts, ensure ALL your webpages have a Google Analytics tracking code installed. 

Web analytics is an important tool because it tells you what’s working and what’s not. It provides you with critical data that will help you determine what you are doing right and the things you can improve on.

Here are 3 long-tail article writing tips you can use to help you write more effective online content:

Long-Tail Article Writing Tip #1: Include primary keyword phrase in the title of your article

When creating a title for your article, be sure to include your primary keyword phrase as far as possible. This will help increase the prominence of your primary keyword phrase in the search engines.

Don’t forget your title needs to be interesting and informative, so don’t try to stuff more than one keyword phrase in your title!

Long-Tail Article Writing Tip #2: Include as many related keywords and keyword variations in your content

While it is true that you should place your target primary long-tail keyword in the headline of your blog or article, it is also true (as seen in the above example) that you can target (whether intentionally or unintentionally) many other secondary long-tail keywords (and therefore drive more traffic to your website) by simply including as many related keywords and keyword variations as possible in your content.

For example, when I wrote the Camtasia Chipmunk Audio Bug Fix article, I included the following related keywords in the body of my article:

- Camtasia Studio
- Techsmith
- swf format
- Flash player (v9.0.115.0)
- fix to this problem
- Adobes (creators of Flash)
- Camtasia 5.0.2 update

Notice this sample list of keywords used in my article are not only very specific but also very relevant to the topic in question.

The more relevant keywords and keyword variations you include in the article, the higher the chance your article will be ‘seen’ by someone in the search engines. Another advantage is your article will be seen as more credible by the search engines.

Long-Tail Article Writing Tip #3: Write for the reader and not for the search engines!

A common mistake I see people make when it comes to writing SEO content is they repeat the primary keyword phrase in the article excessively (also known as keyword stuffing) in hope of achieving a higher "keyword density". The end result is an article that sounds "unnatural".

When writing online content, focus on the reader, not the search engines!

And forget about trying to achieve a "keyword density" target – In fact, the search engines are beginning to penalize web pages that are optimized too perfectly by imposing an Over Optimization Penalty (OOP) on such pages.

Be warned!

Follow the above long-tail article writing tips the next time you create online content and you’ll drive more search engine visitors to your website in no time!
